Astro Project at
Hamilton Heights Elementary School
Collaborative Ukrainian Experiment -
Students and Teachers Investigating Plants in Space
-continued-
The students planted Astro Plant seeds on the same day the
astronauts did. The plant date was November 7th and the launch date was
November 19th.
The launch took place 2 days before the flowers opened.
The students hand pollinated the flowers, and followed a schedule for fertilizing
and measuring. At the conclusion of the experiment data was gathered by
each classroom and the students prepared statistics for analyzing the
results. The following information was entered into a database on the internet
by each class: plant height at day 14, first day of open flower, and the number of seeds
produced. The total seeds for all classrooms was 5114.
The students studied the effects of microgravity on plant life, completed
math lessons by measuring in millimeters and
milliliters, and
adding, subtracting and computing averages, they also observed, recorded
and analyzed. Mrs. Messmer's class also interviewed the ground crew engineer in charge of
crane operations over the internet.
They viewed pictures of the astronauts plants on the space shuttle that
were downloaded to the internet during the mission.
At the conclusion of the project they compared the results
of each classroom and drew conclusions.
They were awarded certificates and made
book marks from their dried plants.
